When looking for the best Canada CD rates, the investor should look for GIC rates. This is Guaranteed Investment Contracts which is the Canadian version of Certificates of Deposits.
There is an online company named GICDirect that has the best posted rates. Their 5 year GIC has an annual interest of 3.55%, monthly pay of 3.40% and a RRSP/RPIF of 3.55%. The 4 year GIC has an annual interest of 3.30%, monthly pay of 3.10% and a RRSP/RPIF of 3.30%. The 3 year GIC has an annual interest of 2.95%, monthly pay of 2.85% and a RRSP/RPIF of 2.95%.the 2 year GIC has an annual interest of 2.46%, monthly pay of 2.35% and a RRSP/RPIF of 2.50%.
The 1 year GIC has an annual interest of 2.00%, monthly pay of 1.85% and a RRSP/RPIF of 2.00%. These rates were posted on July 26, 2010. In the fine print a stament does read the rates vary depending on where the depositor is located. There is no mention of what the minimum deposit is to open an account.
The second best CD rates or GIC rates are from HSBC. The minimum deposit is $1000 for an annual or semiannual fixed rate and the rates were posted on June 17, 2010. The 5 year GIC has an annual interest of 2.25%. The 4 year GIC has an annual interest of 1.45%. The 3 year GIC has an annual interest of 1.30%. The 2 year GIC has an annual interest of 1.00%. The 1 year GIC has an annual interest of 0.75%.
The variation between the 2 best Canada CD rates of GIC rates is large. Invest with caution.
