Wachovia CD Rates Guide

From one of the biggest banks now, the Wachovia CD rates guide is showing that Wachovia Bank has special CDs that boast high returns, under the current financial circumstances. As an independent company, it was the fourth-largest bank holding company in the U.S. based on total assets until it was purchased by Wells Fargo in 2008 to avoid failure by Wachovia.

The merger of Wells Fargo and Wachovia bank charters was completed March 20, 2010. States containing both brands (not converted already) will convert in 2010 and all remaining branches will re-brand by 2011 to the Wells Fargo brand.

At present, there are Wachovia featured CDs that are in the offering. These CDs require a minimum deposit of $5000 to obtain the special APYs, and a Wachovia Checking account to qualify for the special promotion. The terms and rates are as follows.

The 26 Month Special CD has an interest rate of 1.00% with an APY of 1.01%. The 40 Month Special CD has an interest rate of 1.49% with an APY of 1.50%. The 58 Month Special CD has an interest rate of 2.13% with an APY of 2.15%.

Outside of the special CDs, they do have the regular Fixed Rate CDs that require a smaller minimum opening deposit of $1000 to obtain their current APYs. The 3 Month CD has an interest rate of 0.01% with an APY of 0.01%. The 6 Month CD has an interest rate of 0.10% with an APY of 0.10%.

World Bank CD Rates

The World Bank CD rates are not from the international financial institution that supplies leveraged loans to developing countries around the world. It is also not the World Bank Group. These CD rates would have been from the World Savings Bank.

World Savings Bank was one of the financial institutions that made a great number of sub-prime loans while the mortgage boom was underway. They required the homeowners to only pay 1.95% to 2.85% of the loan as a minimum payment.

In 2006, Wachovia bought out World Savings Bank along with all of the loans that were made. When this occurred, the minimum loan payment for homeowners was lowered to 1.5% and then to 1.0%. Wachovia continued to make these sub-prime loans until the mortgage market began to crumble in 2008.

By the end of 2008, Wachovia itself was sold to Wells Fargo which was finalized in mid 2009. Today, Wells Fargo is one of the big 4 banks in the nation.

So the great reputation that was World Saving Bank was carried forward to Wachovia and improved their reputation. This has now all been absorbed by Wells Fargo which has its rich history that is over 150 years, dating back to the stage coach.

All that remains of World Savings Bank are the sub-prime loans. There are no CD rates to speak of since the bank itself is no longer.

The last known World Bank CD Rates were exceptional at 5.76% for a 10 month CD. Unfortunately, this rate dates back to 2006 and the pre-recession times before the bubble bursted.

Wachovia still has the featured CDs in some areas that they are currently in promo. The minimum opening deposit amount still remains $5000. At this time, the 23 month CD has an interest rate of 1.14% with an APY of 1.15%. The 30 month CD has an interest rate of 1.73% with an APY of 1.75%. The 37 month CD has an interest rate of 2.13% with an APY of 2.15%. So if you feel these are the rates for you, take advantage of these promotional CD rates because these promo rates may not last long.

Wachovia’s rates on their standard fixed rate CDs also remain the same. The interest rates and APYs are the same per term regardless of the balance tier whether $1000 to $100,000. When we last considered Wachovia CD rates, we here at Best CD Rates Today focused on six month terms and specials. Now, it’s time to look at all of the certificate of deposit offers at Wachovia so you can see the latest.

There are three special offers for Wachovia certificate of deposit rates right now. These special terms are for 14, 17, and 27 months, have minimum deposit requirements of $5,000 and require a linked checking account at Wachovia as well. We here at Best CD Rates Today had several queries about how the six month CD rates are right now. One person asked about offers at Wachovia, so we thought we’d cover that first. In our next installment, we’ll look at the best 6 month CD rates available nationally.

Wachovia 6 month CD accounts are giving a 0.45% annual percentage yield (APY) right now on all deposit levels, with the minimum deposit being $1,000. You can raise that rate to 0.55% APY if you’re willing to ad another 3 months to your term (making it 9).
