Most certificate of deposit rates have a fixed rate of interest and a maturity date for when the interest is accrued and transferable. The principal of a certificate of deposit (CD) cannot be lost, unlike stocks, unless the investor violates the terms of the contract with the financial institution. This makes a CD a guaranteed investment tool.

All CDs are insured by the FDIC so even if the bank offering the CD you have invested in fails, your money is safe as long as the investment and earned interest is under the legal limit.

There are two main factors that affect CD rates available to you. The first is the length of time until the CD matures. The longer you will have your money tied up, the higher your rate will be. This is because the longer you commit to leaving your money, the more flexibility the institution has with it. They are willing to pay you a better rate because they can use the money for a wider variety of purposes.

The second factor that affects CD rates is the current interest rate environment. CD rates are set according to other competitive rates out in the market. Every institution knows that you have a wide variety of choices so they will try to stay competitive when setting rates. When you see interest rates rising, you will also see CD rates rising.

A financial institution may try to win some short-term business by offering slightly higher rates in the hope that once they get a customer in, the customer will stay and bring additional assets. In general, credit unions have rates that are slightly higher than those of banks’ because credit unions are nonprofits, so they can afford to offer a little more to their customers at the expense of reaping higher margins.

Last week saw the now usual CD rate cuts we have been familiar with during these financial climates, but there were several CD rate increases as well. Check and compare current nationally available CD rates from VirtualBank, Giantbank.com, Bank of Internet, Discover Bank, American Express Bank, and First Internet Bank. Although the number of banks that increased their certificate of deposit rates last week was higher than usual, it certainly does not signal a reverse in the downward trend in rates.

For additional resources about CDs on this website, please view FNB CD Rates.

We strive to bring you the latest and most accurate data possible from the home sites of the financial institutions we name. Always remember, the bigger the risk, the larger the reward or loss. Invest with caution.

Although better known for student loans, the Sallie Mae CD rates come from the New Online CD by Sallie Mae. These are designed to help you achieve your goals by guaranteeing a great return on your investment and maximizing your earning power. There is no minimum deposit, no monthly fees, and no hidden charges.

SLM Corporation, commonly known as Sallie Mae, is a publicly-traded U.S. corporation whose operations are originating, servicing, and collecting on student loans. The Student Loan Marketing Association was originally created in 1972 as a government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) and began privatizing its operations in 1997, a process it completed at the end of 2004 when Congress terminated its federal charter, ending its ties to the government. The company remains the country’s largest originator of federally insured student loans. Through its specialized subsidiaries and divisions, Sallie Mae also provides debt management services as well as business and technical products to a range of business clients, including colleges, universities, and loan guarantors.

Sallie Mae’s New Online CDs are designed with no minimums and no monthly fees. With this institution, banking should be simple, rewarding and hassle-free. The Sallie Mae New Online 12 month CD has an APY of 1.50%. The 36 month CD has an APY of 2.20%. The 60 month CD has an APY of 3.00%. While the certificates of deposit require no minimum balance, you must have funds in your account in order for your account to earn the APY. The interest rate on your CD will be compounded daily and will be credited to your account on a monthly basis. Your CD automatically renews at maturity. At maturity, you will also have a 10 calendar day grace period in which you can withdraw funds from your account without penalty.

These CD rates were posted on 3/8/2010 and are still current as of 3/10/2010, and may change without notice. Visit their website for more details on the Sallie Mae CD rates.
