Like anywhere else, decent rates for Texas certificate of deposit rates will be found in long term CDs and usually with credit unions. In Texas, it is no different.

El Paso Area Teachers Federal Credit Union’s share certificates (CD) require a $500 minimum deposit to earn APY. Dividends are paid quarterly. Their 1 year CD has an interest rate of 1.90% with an APY of 1.91%. Their 2 year CD has an interest rate of 2.35% with an APY of 2.37%. Their 3 year and 4 year CDs each have an interest rate of 2.80% with an APY of 2.83%. Their 5 year CD has an interest rate of 3.45% with an APY of 3.50%. These rates were posted 3/25/2010 and are still current and effective 4/5/2010.

Among banks in Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston, OmniAmerican Bank has decent rates. Their required minimum deposit is $500. Their 1 year CD has an interest rate of 1.54% with an APY of 1.55%. Their 2 year CD has an interest rate of 2.08% with an APY of 2.10%. Their 3 year CD has an interest rate of 2.47% with an APY of 2.50%. Their 5 year CD has an interest rate of 2.96% with an APY of 3.00%. Interest is compounded monthly. These rates were posted 3/8/2010 and are still current and effective 4/5/2010.

However, in areas where Omni American Bank is not available, Ally Bank offers rates which are better than most other banks. Their 1 year CD has an interest rate of 1.53% with an APY of 1.54%. Their 3 year CD has an interest rate of 2.31% with an APY of 2.34%. Their 4 year CD has an interest rate of 2.61% with an APY of 2.64%. Their 5 year CD has an interest rate of 2.95% with an APY of 2.99%. No minimum to open. These rates were posted 4/2/2010 and are still current and effective 4/5/2010.
